OUR JOURNEY
Michelle was born and raised on the Oregon Coast. With Family roots that go back to the Oregon trail. She grew up surrounded by animals and a lifestyle built around living off the land making a homestead wherever life took her. That background sparked a lifelong respect for hard work, self-reliance, and traditional craftsmanship.
In 2015, Michelle chose to further her education by attending a commercial tannery and taxidermy course in Helena, Montana. What started as a desire to learn quickly became a true passion, leading her into the artisan tanning work she continues today.
Catherine Creek Hides began in Michelle's garage in Cave Junction, OR. As her skills grew so did the business. With the help of her dad, she built up her workspace, and together they hand built the tumbler that is still used in the shop today. Michelle started with whatever she could get her hands on from roadkill to hides from the butcher truck. Using each one as an opportunity to practice, improve, and refine her craft.
Michelle began selling her furs and hides at local farmers markets. That early support helped turn a small personal operation into a growing business. She soon began working with local goat farmers, then alpaca farms, and buffalo from a local tribe, building relationships that continue to this day.
Eventually, Michelle outgrew her garage and needed a place where the business could truly expand. She found that home in Union, Oregon.
Today, 11 years later, Catherine Creek Hides has grown into a busy and expanding tannery. With well trained employees and a continued commitment to quality craftsmanship, we are proud of how far we've come and look forward to meeting you and working with you for years to come.
