Bone Cleaning Methods
Dermestid Beetles
Dermestidae are a family of Coleoptera that are commonly referred to as skin beetles. Other common names include larder beetle, hide or leather beetles, carpet beetles, and khapra beetles. We utilize these beetles to get a museum quality cleaning on all our bones. It does take more time to use this method, however the end result is worth it!
Maceration
Process of cleaning Bone by removing soft tissue using bacteria in water without damaging the bones. I personally think this is better than the beetles because the bones come out much cleaner and spend less time in the degreasing tank.
We use beetles on carnivores and small skulls as it helps to keep the teeth together. We use maceration on medium to extra large skulls.
